Climate benefits of current biofuels do not weigh up to the costs of phosphorous depletion

In the production of crops such as wheat, corn, palm oil and sugar beet for biofuel, the costs of phosphorus depletion outweigh the benefits of reduced CO2 emissions. In the international Ambio magazine published this week, researchers at Wageningen University, part of Wageningen UR, recommend revision of the policy objectives for mixing sustainable energy with biofuels, partly because there are better alternatives for such energy sources (sun, wind, biogas).
